Selecting the Correct Pumps for Coal Washing Plants

Mud pumps are very important for conveying difficult and high solid content fluids and sludge. The annual demand for these pumps only reflects one aspect of the important space they occupy in many industries. The global slurry pump market is estimated to exceed US $1 billion per year. Although these sales only account for the single digit part of the total pump sales, the cost of slurry pump occupies a large space budget in the Mining collective energy. Metso, a process equipment supplier, estimates that slurry pumps account for only about 5% of the centrifugal pumps installed in the entire mining industry (the most common type for this purpose), but this small part accounts for 80% of the total pumping cost of the industry.

Their actual living space in mining operations is usually very poor - at the bottom of the oil pan, preparation plant or thickener underflow discharge point, or in the pipeline serving the transportation of abrasive slurry. Their duty cycle ranges from continuous to sporadic, depending on the application, and usually have highly variable flow rates and particle sizes. In some applications, internal wear can be severe, with up to 2 mm of material disappearing from the surface of key components every day. Due to the increased possibility of high wear rates of transported materials, pump manufacturers have added thicker and heavier components and / or liners to make the mud model larger and heavier than their pump brothers.

How to select slurry pump in coal preparation plant?

The pump conveying medium used in coal washing plant is mostly slurry water or coal slurry containing magnetite powder. Therefore, the selection of slurry pump in coal preparation plant needs to know the following points:

(1) Wear resistant, durable and reliable;

(2) The shaft seal is reliable without water seepage

(3) Requirements of box filter press for slurry pump: when the box filter press starts working, the pump head is low and the total flow is large; In the middle and late stage of work, there must be high head and small total flow, that is, the steeper the curve of total flow and pump head, the higher.

The reasonable selection of slurry pump is the key factor to improve the service life of the pump and save the cost of slurry pump. The reasonable selection of slurry pump includes the reasonable selection of slurry pump model, performance parameters, material of overflow components, sealing type and transmission mode. The following 7 steps teach you to choose the slurry pump that best suits your application:

1. Firstly, the model of slurry pump is determined according to the user's on-site working conditions. The horizontal slurry pump is applicable to the inlet with certain pressure, and the vertical slurry pump is applicable to the mud pit.

2. Judge the material of overflow part according to the pH of slurry. For example, acidity can be made of A49, cr30 or natural rubber. For the slurry with large particles and strong impact resistance, it is best to choose metal wear-resistant material runner, while for the slurry with small particles and non sharp edges and corners, it is best to choose rubber material runner.

3. Selection of slurry pump motor. The motor power of the slurry pump shall be 1.2 times of the shaft power of the slurry pump, because during the operation of the slurry pump, the friction between the slurry and the pump body and overload operation may cause power loss.

4. Determine the sealing method. There are three sealing methods: packing seal, discharge gland, auxiliary impeller seal and mechanical seal.

5. Confirm the driving type. The transmission modes of slurry pump include V-belt transmission, elastic coupling transmission, gear reducer transmission, hydraulic coupling transmission, frequency conversion transmission and thyristor speed regulation. Among them, elastic coupling and V-shaped V-belt are cheap and easy to disassemble, so they should be preferred.

6. According to the flow and head parameters provided by the user and the water performance curve of the slurry pump after increasing the margin, select the appropriate slurry pump and calculate the motor power.

7. Confirm the floor area of the work site with the user, design the installation drawings, and provide the installation precautions of the slurry pump.

The harsh environment of coal processing plant makes the selection of pump particularly important. Generally, pump users focus on purchase price and initial efficiency. However, it is important to consider the life cycle cost, the energy cost of running the pump, and the cost of repairing and replacing parts.

The basic factors to consider when selecting a pump include:

What is the required head and flow rate?

How far does the water need to be pumped?

What kind of dirty water is actually pumped - turbid or contains heavy solids?

Friction losses due to pipe configuration shall also be considered.

In the market, there are many types and models of slurry pumps. Different types of slurry pumps are widely used in slurry transportation of metallurgical concentrators, hydraulic ash removal of thermal power plants, coal slurry and heavy medium transportation of coal washing plants, slurry lifting of sand washing plants, river desilting, etc.Fengwang manufactures an extensive selection of industry-best slurry pumps and sludge pumps for various markets and applications.
